NHS England: Introduction to Pharmacogenomics

NHS England has released a highly informative educational resource, "Introduction to Pharmacogenomics", now available on Health Education England’s (HEE) website. This comprehensive guide offers valuable insights into what pharmacogenomics (PGx) is and the significance of its role in healthcare.

Authored and reviewed by leading experts in the field, the guide covers everything from the basic principles of genetics to the practical applications of PGx testing in clinical settings, including:

  • An overview of the role of genetics in drug response.

  • Explanation of PGx testing and its role in guiding prescribing decisions.

  • Real-world examples of pharmacogenomic applications across medical specialities.

  • Overview of international guidelines and databases.

  • Resources for further learning.

Despite the current barriers to widespread implementation of PGx in public healthcare, such as cost and infrastructure limitations, the article predicts pharmacogenomics will become more widespread within the NHS over the next decade.

The guide also highlights the importance of the Dutch Pharmacogenetics Working Group (DPWG) as one of the two main organisations creating international consensus guidelines to support pharmacogenomic prescribing. It is precisely the guidelines of this organisation that we at Manatara use exclusively to form the basis of our recommendations so that you can be confident that the advice in our reports is evidence-based.

With the NHS HEE's commitment to advancing healthcare education, this resource marks a significant milestone in the integration of pharmacogenomics into mainstream medicine. Click on the link below to find out more.
